Welcome to my Blog! My name is Amber Heading and I am part of the growing number of women who’ve become first-time mamas after the age of forty. If you’re in the same boat, chances are it didn’t take you long to realize the experiences and advice of your younger child-bearing peers just doesn’t quite relate. It’s like we’re living in a completely different universe sometimes. Whether it’s trying to act empathetic to the 20-something who’s been trying to get pregnant “a whole 6 months” to hearing about problem-free pregnancies and home-births (as opposed to fertility treatments, preeclampsia, and extended NICU stays) or the barrage of unsolicited advice from very well-meaning (and very young) new mothers that just doesn’t jive with the reality of…well, let me just say it…being a much older mama. Our health is worse but our finances are better; our flower is fading but we are comfortable in our own skin; we’ve learned to not sweat the small stuff (and it’s mostly all small stuff) but we fret about other things that the youngin’s don’t know enough about to know they should, too. We have to worry about college savings and retirement at the same time. The list goes on and on. It makes it hard to join in the conversation with the other mommies at the park. If you can relate, this blog is for you. I’m so glad you’re here!
This blog is meant for anybody that might find it helpful, but it is definitely written from a Christian perspective. I have been a member of my wonderful church family in Southern Oregon for over 35 years (since I was a child). During Bible College while obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Ministry, I developed an interest in child development, parenting styles and family dynamics. I took many supplemental courses at our local community college on the topic of Early Childhood Development. I am now getting to put all I learned into practice with my toddler and write about the experience! Please feel free to join the conversation in the comments, join the Facebook community where you can share your experience and ask questions from others in the same boat, and if nothing else, know you’re not alone.
Thanks so much for reading, and God bless!
